Every Vocab Loco ready-made list has a cover designed to help you identify its content at a glance. The Cover Identity System uses a consistent structure, color coding, and visual elements across all list types, so you can quickly find the right list without reading every title.

Understanding the Vocab Loco Cover Identity System: each cover uses a color-coded category badge, a subcategory type label, a main title, a visual icon, and a colored wave — all in a consistent layout so teachers can identify any list type at a glance.
How to read a cover
Every cover follows the same layout, with seven elements always in the same position:
- Category Badge — the top label that identifies the main category (Vocabulary, Spelling, Publisher, Themed, or Holiday).
- Type (Subcategory) — a colored pill below the category badge that specifies the list type (e.g., Grade Level, Reading Level, Rules, Bee, Journeys).
- Main Title — the primary identifier, such as a grade (3rd Grade), a Lexile range (415L–760L), or a theme name (Halloween).
- Visual Icon — an icon that reinforces the list type at a glance.
- Colored Wave — a decorative wave at the bottom whose color matches the category.
- Decorative Pattern — a subtle background texture that adds visual depth.
- VL Ownership Mark — the Vocab Loco logo mark in the bottom-right corner of every cover.
Color-coded categories
Each category has a dedicated color so you can identify the list type before reading any text:
| Color | Category | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Vocabulary | General vocabulary lists organized by grade or reading level |
| Orange | Spelling | Spelling-focused lists including rules, challenge words, and spelling bee prep |
| Blue | Publisher | Lists aligned to specific textbook publishers and programs |
| Purple | Themed | Lists organized around academic themes, skills, or programs |
| Red | Holiday | Seasonal and holiday word lists |
Subcategory types
Within each category, the subcategory badge specifies exactly what kind of list it is:
| Category | Subcategory | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Vocabulary | Grade Level | Words selected for a specific grade (e.g., 3rd Grade) |
| Vocabulary | Reading Level | Words matched to a Lexile reading range (e.g., 415L–760L) |
| Spelling | Rules | Words grouped by spelling rules and patterns |
| Spelling | Challenge Words | Advanced spelling words for higher-level practice |
| Spelling | Bee | Words used in spelling bee competitions |
| Publisher | Program name (e.g., Journeys) | Words tied to a specific textbook series or publisher program |
| Themed | Theme name (e.g., Summer Program, Compound Words Lists) | Words grouped around an academic topic, skill, or seasonal program |
| Holiday | Holiday name (e.g., Christmas, Halloween) | Vocabulary specific to a holiday or seasonal celebration |
The cover system is designed to be scannable at any size. Whether you are browsing a full list catalog or viewing a small thumbnail, the color and layout give you enough information to identify the list type instantly.
