How to Customize Vocabulary Words with AI (Definitions, Sentences & More)

Created by Vocab Loco, Modified on Tue, 12 May at 4:38 PM by Ace Turner

Vocab Loco’s AI tools let teachers customize how vocabulary words are taught by instantly generating definitions, example sentences, synonyms, and antonyms tailored to student needs and grade levels.

All AI-generated content is fully reviewable and teacher-controlled before being applied to a word list.

Step 1: Customize AI-Generated Word Content

For each word in a word list, AI can help you:

  • Generate clear, grade-appropriate definitions
  • Create example sentences that model proper word usage
  • Suggest relevant synonyms and antonyms
  • Adjust language for specific learner groups (for example, ESL or early readers)
  • Maintain consistency across vocabulary instruction

You can customize one word at a time or apply AI tools in bulk for larger word sets.

Step 2: Generate Content for Individual Words

  1. Open a Custom Word List in Vocab Loco.
  2. Locate the word you want to customize.
  3. Click Generate with AInext to:
    • Definition
    • Sentence
    • Synonym
    • Antonym
  4. Review the AI-generated suggestions.
  5. Edit, accept, or skip each result.
  6. Apply changes when ready.
Important: Nothing is saved automatically. Teachers remain in full control of all AI-generated content.

Step 3: Refine AI Results

When generating content, you can guide the AI using the Refine AI Results field.

Use this area to specify:

  • Grade level
  • Language support needs
  • Sentence complexity
  • Instructional focus
Example: Results for 3rd grade second language learners.

This helps ensure AI-generated content aligns with your classroom goals.

Step 4: Use Bulk Word Customization

When working with larger word lists, you can also use AI to:

  • Generate definitions, sentences, synonyms, or antonyms for multiple words at once
  • Maintain consistent language across an entire list
  • Save time when building or updating large vocabulary sets

Bulk tools follow the same review-and-approve workflow as individual word customization.

Why Teachers Use AI Word Customization

  • Reduces manual editing
  • Supports differentiated instruction
  • Improves instructional clarity
  • Keeps vocabulary instruction consistent
  • Saves hours of preparation time

Important Notes

  • AI tools are optional
  • AI features use credits, purchased separately
  • AI tools must be enabled by the teacher
  • All AI-generated content is reviewable before applying
