A: Vocab Loco does not include a built-in placement or diagnostic test. The program is organized by grade level, and teachers assign word lists directly based on each student's current level.
To get started, we recommend assigning students to their current grade level. If the content feels too challenging, you can easily move them to a lower grade to build confidence before progressing. If it feels too easy, simply assign a higher-grade list group instead.
How Teachers Determine the Right Starting Level
Because Vocab Loco gives teachers full control over which lists are assigned to which students, the placement decision stays with you. You can:
- Start all students at their current grade and adjust based on how they perform on in-platform activities and tests.
- Assign different grade-level lists to different students — for example, assigning 5th grade lists to students who need extra support and 7th grade lists to advanced learners in the same class.
- Use your existing classroom assessments or reading data to inform the starting point before assigning lists in Vocab Loco.
Pro Tip: After a few weeks, use the Reports section to review test scores, passing rates, and word mastery — this data can help you decide whether to move students up or down a level.
Q: Can I assign different grade levels to different students? A: Yes. You can assign any word list to any student regardless of grade level. Students only see the lists you assign to them, so each student's experience can be fully customized to their needs.
