A: Banked Words are words students have successfully practiced and passed once, while Mastered Words are words they have fully learned through repeated review and proficiency testing.
Vocab Loco uses a progression system that helps students move vocabulary from short-term learning into long-term mastery.
What Are Banked Words?
Banked Words are words students have practiced during their weekly word lists and successfully passed in an initial spelling or vocabulary test.
These words have been introduced and learned at a basic level, but students have not fully mastered them yet. Once a word reaches this stage, it becomes a Banked Word and begins its journey toward long-term retention.
What Are Mastered Words?
Mastered Words are words students have fully locked into long-term memory.
To master a word, students must pass proficiency reviews three separate times across different review sessions. This repeated exposure helps strengthen retention and vocabulary growth.
Once mastered, a word becomes what Vocab Loco calls a “life word” — a word that has truly become part of the student’s working vocabulary.
How Vocab Loco Encourages Review
To motivate students to continue reviewing and mastering words, Vocab Loco includes Zoodle House, an interactive virtual pet experience.
Each time students pass tests and review activities, they earn Zoodle Minutes, which unlock reward time with their digital pets.
This reward system helps turn vocabulary review into an engaging and positive experience.
Track Progress on the Word Road
Students can visually track each word’s journey on the Word Road, watching words progress from Banked to Mastered over time.
Our ultimate goal is to help students turn weekly word lists into lifelong vocabulary skills.
